Summary/Abstract: The present study proposes a reflection on the difficulties that a translator faces when translating into French old Romanian words belonging mainly to the religious vocabulary and pertaining to the broader cultural and historical background, especially those referring to the nobiliar ranks in the Romanian Principalities. They occur both in specialized texts of religious or historical relevance, and in texts with an informative scope, such as the monastic or parochial monographies of the touristic guides concerning Romanian regions rich in religious monuments. Our analysis focuses on the French translation of words like ferecătură, dveră, Tetraevanghel, acoperământ, turlă, bolniță, pisanie, egumenie, mănăstire închinată, diac, hatman, comis etc.
