Summary/Abstract: Immigrants from a socioeconomic point of view, migrants from a linguistic one, the Romanians that have settled in France have been developing a series of relationships with their mother tongue; these relationships are very complex as regards representation. Drawing on a sociolinguistic analysis, we aim to analyze the fundamental relationship between identity and mother tongue concerning these representations and to argue an ideal situation of bi- or plurilingualism by keeping the Romanian language and transmitting it to a future generation. Considering the migrationist phenomenon a fabulous linguistic research laboratory, studies on bi- and plurilingualism insist particularly on the symbols of the mother tongue and its role in constructing a complex identity in bilinguals and plurilinguals.
