Summary/Abstract: In this scientific paper we intend to make theoretical analysis about the prepositions category within modern linguistic framework as a very contradict category in the term of categorization, due to their specific nature. Our approach will be relay on the descriptive and analytic plan. We will reflect all the concepts in the conceptual plan, beginning with traditional grammar, including Albanian syntactic studies to see advancements in the study of this category within modern linguistic framework specifically on structuralism and generativism direction. The main issue being discused in this paper is the categorization of preposition as a functional or lexical words. Problems in this area are related to the criteria that what is considered a lexical category and what is a functional category. In general, we are based on A. Martinet criteria that classify all grammatical unit in open category an functional category. The functionalism define prepositions as a functional element that serve to determines the other function element (1974). G. Pullum treat the prepositions as a headword of phrases comparable to those headed by verbs, nouns, adjectives and adverbs.Generativism define the preposition category as a lexical head that, like every other lexical headword, can license and govern dependents of many different sorts.Recent years, viwieng prepositions as a very contradictory category has been given new proposals. According to new linguistc analysis concept, A. Mardale defines prepositions as hybrid and semilexical category characterized by semantic and grammatical features. In Albanian grammar there are quite a few studies for this category, they are treated in the context of the phraseology theory, seen as syntaxes, as well as morphological means to express the relationships between the limbs in the sentence. Taking into account only the criterion of relevance, generally in Albanian grammars no prepositional constructions are accepted.
