Summary/Abstract: This article discusses the the sound of quartal harmony, also known as “fourth voicings,” which are commonly used in mainstream jazz piano styles. They are constructed mostly with the perfect fourth and tritone intervals. Quartal harmony has a modern, spacious sound frequently heard in the music of Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, McCoy Tyner and many other pianists who have been influenced by these giants of jazz.
