Summary/Abstract: In this article the author writes about his experiences as professor of jazz theory at Oklahoma State University, attempting to synthesize his pedagogical methods in teaching harmonic concepts of jazz music. The article explains the basic principles of jazz reharmonization – the enrichment of the original chord structure of jazz standards and popular music through the use of various compositional techniques: preceding a V chord with a II to create a II-V progression, tritone substitution, major-minor substitution, chromatic techniques such as tonicization of major and minor chords through dominant seventh chords, as well as various diatonic or chromatic auxiliary parallelisms and triadic extensions.
