Summary/Abstract: The essay examines the biblical and theological basis of the cult of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and its implications for spirituality. The first part addresses the heart as biblical anthropological and theological concept, as well as the reception and reinterpretation of this concept in Western theology. Subsequently the Cult of the Sacred Heart, a private devotion focused on the passion, coloured by emotions, is examined from the view-point of the liturgical movement, that aimed at renewing the theological-communal dimension of the liturgy. The private devotion retains its legitimacy and meaning in so far as it draws from the liturgy.
