Summary/Abstract: Eucharistic worship outside Mass, a proprium of the Western Church, developed in the second millennium. It was prepared in the East by the understanding of the Eucharist as fearsome mystery and the shaping of the liturgy after the model of the imperial court, centered on Christ as Pantocrator. In the West, the decisive stages were the reification of the Eucharist and the focus on the real-substantial presence. Nonetheless, it will be shown that Eucharistic worship actually emerged from the Eucharistic celebration, from the conviction that Christ was truly present in this celebration. This faith became the basis and source of the Eucharistic devotion of the second millennium. The reservation and worship of Eucharist, the elevation and adoration, as well as the theophoric processions focused on the adoration of the divine presence. The introductory outline of the development of the Eucharistic celebration points to the connection between Eucharistic celebration and worship. The second part discusses the emergence of the different forms of Eucharistic worship as expressions of a novel religious experience, the adoration of the divinity present in the Eucharist.
