RECONSTRUCTING THE EARLIEST DATED AND LOCALISED SLAVONIC MANUSCRIPT

Summary/Abstract: Constantine the Younger of Preslav’s 906 translation of the Four Homilies against the Arians by Athanasius of Alexandria is known in 10 copies, 9 of which acknowledge their dependence on one manuscript by preserving its colophon of Tudor the Monk, who finished the fair copy of the translation at Preslav before May 2nd 907 (the 10th is a reedition by Epiphanius Slavynec’kyj for the print version, Moscow 1655). 4 of these are independent copies of Tudor’s Glagolitic original (whether 2 more are so as well remains to be established); the 3 copies in the Great Menologium of Macarius of Novgorod evidently depend on one of the extant transcriptions into Cyrillic. 4–6 independent copies of a single antigraph provide a reliable foundation for its reconstruction.
