FROM A TRANSLATION TO ON THE LETTERS AND THE CHRONOGRAPH

Summary/Abstract: The text On the Script (S) and the treatise On the Letters (L) present the earliest known case of a double translation from one and the same source text: a scholia to Dionysius of Halicarnassus’ Ars grammatica (2nd c. BC). Its translation in L is more precise and lacks the translation of the Greek letters into Slavonic letters which mars S. The translation in the idiolect of S, but with the corrections of L, is found as a fixture of ch. 6 of the Chronograph of 1512 and ch. 12 of the Chronograph of 1617 (X). It is argued that the translator’s error in S served as a trigger for the composition of L which, in turn, served as a source of correction to X, so constituting the earliest known case of literary interaction in Slavonic. As to the Chronograph, its original core is shown to have been compiled in Glagolitic, probably not at great remove from L, which has a date ante quem of ca. 835; the date post quem of 996 (according to the Alexandrian era), given in a chronogram in the colophon, seems to be the date of its first continuation, probably made at Kiev.
