Summary/Abstract: The aim of this publication is to identification conceptualizations and operationalizations of employee engagement and their relationship. Researching attempts evoke the need to confront the research findings. This requires to set the definition and indicators of the constructs every time in order to have the research as the benchmark for another one. Consequently, when there is no integrity between conceptualization and operationalization of the phenomenon, the recognition and explanation of the differences in understanding and interpretation of the phenomenon is needed because of these diversities. Thus, this article offers explore of main interpretations and measures of employee engagement and their implications for theory and practice. It was established that inconsistent understanding of this construct is the result of different perspectives of perception of this behavior. One of the problems that appeared is a conceptual layering of engagement into other one, already known constructs such as job satisfaction or job burnout. This article also contains the proposals for future researches which fit in the need of key solutions of researchers, which is finding of a reliable and universal measure of employee engagement. The applied research method: the critical analysis of the scientific literature.
