Summary/Abstract: RESEARCH OBJECTIVE: The aim of this article is to present the basic types of determinants of the development of vocational education – taking into account their role and their interrelationships. THE RESEARCH PROBLEM AND METHODS: The presented research problem addresses the question: what socio-economic determinants have a decisive influence on the development of vocational education and what are the relations between them. Based on the literature of the subject, actual conditions have been identified and grouped in the causal system. THE PROCESS OF ARGUMENTATION: The starting point was the concept of development of vocational education – formal, non-formal and informal. Both quantitative and qualitative, as well as linear and jumping development has been distinguished. On such a background these determinants of vocational education, which have its origins in the external environment of this field of education, has been characterized. RESEARCH RESULTS: The conclusions from the carried out analyzes point out the relations (which are considered as independent variables) between particular determinants, significant from the perspective of vocational training development. CONCLUSIONS, INNOVATIONS, AND RECOMMENDATIONS: The development of vocational education depends primarily on the economic situation and in educational policy priorities resulting from it. Considerations of social nature, such as the prestige of education and occupations, the level of parental aspirations and the specificity of the local environment should also be taken into account. It is recommended to undertake research to determine the strength of the influence of particular conditions on the development of vocational education. Their results would allow the development of a model of actions conducive to the elimination of factors hindering or slowing down the development in the field of vocational training, which is the subject of presented analysis
