Summary/Abstract: The study provides an in-depth analysis of the theoretical and empirical studies that examine the personality characteristics most often associated with risky driving behavior. The purpose of the analysis is to provide a thorough understanding of the problematic aspects of driver’s personality and to distinguish those personality characteristics that predominantly predict dangerous driving. A large number of studies have been reviewed and seven personality characteristics have been derived: emotional stability, anxiety, locus of control, anger, aggression, risk taking, and sensation seeking. The results of the analyses revealed that these characteristics influence the driver’s behavior and are closely related with risky driving behavior. These results can contribute for development of a complex method for measurement of those characteristics that distinguish the drivers’ propensity to risky and dangerous driving. In addition the results can be used as a basis for establishment of educational programs for prevention of risky driving.
