Summary/Abstract: Article outlines the approaches to parenting in the psychology of development. The author traces the development and the introduction of the theory of “parenting style” by Diana Baumrind. Baumrind `s parenting model consists of three basic parenting styles. Further is discussed the creation of two major dimensions of parenting by Maccoby and Martin and the differentiation of a fourth main parenting style in addition of the three main styles. Special accent is the model presented by Darling and Steinberg, whereby it is crucial defining a clear difference between parenting styles and parenting practices. In conclusion are summarized the most popular and commonly used parenting styles and parenting practices in contemporary society.
