Innovation Creation by Family Firms in Poland – the Patent Data Approach

Summary/Abstract: The aim of this paper is to identify the main practices used by Polish family firms in the field of creating innovation, with particular focus on innovation representing a high level of originality. The article uses patent data from database provided by the Polish Patent Office. In total, 305 applications (concerning inventions and utility models) submitted by 15 family firms in 2003–2017 were analyzed. Based on the results of the research, the enterprises were divided into four categories: companies focusing on the intellectual capital of family members, companies occasionally involving external experts and consultants, companies focusing on the knowledge of key employees, companies performing open innovation.
