Polish dialectal “nicpoty(m)”

Summary/Abstract: The author tries to determine a range of occurrence of the word “nicpoty(m)” on the Polish ethnic and linguistic territory. This word originated from a pronominal phrase “nic po tym/tem” that in various morphological variants (nicpotym, nicpotem, nicpoty) is used in dialects in the function of an adjective/adverb describing a worthless, meaningless thing/activity, or in the function of a noun naming a man who is a good-for-nothing, rascal or hooligan. Today these forms are considered as regionalisms from Wielkopolska but in the past they were known in the bigger area of Poland covering its western and southern parts and were used in common Polish. To determine their originally furthest range of functioning the author had to analyse nationwide and dialectal philological sources both historical and contemporary.
