The Three Occupations of Kassa - Parallels And Morals

Summary/Abstract: Through the example of Kassa (Košice, Slovakia), the paper seeks to explore the scenarios which were followed during the changes of regime on the territory of present-day Slovakia late in 1918 and early in 1919. Instead of treating the events of Kassa in a chronological order, the author opted for a thematic approach. He addresses issues such as the peaceful character of the changes of power, the attitude of the local population to the events, the role of the local elite during the political changes, the breakdown of public order and the emergence of looting. The paper is mainly based on materials taken from the daily press, but also on such subjective sources of information as the recollections of contemporary actors.
