Summary/Abstract: The paper discusses the characteristic plastic specificities of the trifid complex and compound ornamental patterns used in Bulgarian embroidery. For lack of a comprehensive theory about folk ornamentation in the ethnographic literature, light is thrown on the content of the concepts "motif" and "complex-compound motif", with descriptions of the different variants of trifid motifs in Bulgarian embroidery, whose constructive and plastic characteristics are generalized and whose territorial propagation is outlined. An attempt is made to prove their unified basis throughout the historical and ethnic territory of Bulgaria and to associate this unity with the ethnogenesis of the Bulgarian people. The complex ornamental interrelations of the figures in the motif express the rich artistic potential of Bulgarian embroidery. Having unified some of the most typical and widespread figures in Bulgarian embroidery, through its new combinations the motif enriches the expressiveness of artistic embroidery, its creative scope and broadens the thematic content of Bulgarian embroidered ornamentation
