Summary/Abstract: In the autum of 1997, the attention of the reading public was attracted by Račko Popov’s book “Balgarski naroden kalendar” [Bulgarian Folk Calendar]1 . A publication of fine layout and good illustrations describes the traditions in the celebration of the calendar holidays and rituals. The story follows the Eastern Orthodox church calendar and the seasonal division of the year into winter and summer, typical of the Bulgarians, and associated with these two relatively closed cycles in nature and in farm work. In concise articles the reader is introduced to the more significant church and folk holidays: their contents, patrons, characteristic rituals, mythological symbolism, ritual paraphernalia…
