Summary/Abstract: In the past erectile dysfunction were perceived as a disorder of a psychogenic nature. Since the introductionof the sildenafil citrate (Viagra®) in 1998 for the treatment of erectile dysfunctions, they began to be treatedas organic disorders and independent risk factor in cardiac and vascular diseases. The medication proved tobe effective as well as safe and became an important contribution in the development of sexual medicine.
