Summary/Abstract: This article describes parafilias as they are approached in the new DSM-5 (May 2013). The major difference, in comparison to DSM-4 and ICD 10, will be a distinction between paraphilia itself and a paraphilic disorder. To diagnose a paraphilic disorder, both criteria A and B must be met. Criterium B always refers to a distress and impairment to the individual or harm to others. Paraphilia itself, without criterium B being met would not automatically require psychiatric intervention. Also, the controversial term of pedophilic orientation, as used in original edition, was subsequently clarified by American Psychiatric Association as an erroneous use of that phrase. It will be corrected soon in its new manual on mental illnesses.
