Summary/Abstract: The missionary efforts, carried out twice in West Pomerania (in 1124/1125 and 1128) by the bishop Otto of Bamberg, have laid the foundation for a new province of the Church. It took several years before the diocese there was officially established, probably due to political turmoil. It was not until the Pope Innocent II’s decision in 1140 that the Pomeranian bishopric was formed – its first ordinary was a priest called Adalbert, who had taken part in both of Otto’s missions. The effort was continued by Adalbert’s successors: Conrad I, Siegfried and Siegwin. According to the sources from the period, some of the most important tasks before them were the further christianisation of the populace, building new churches, as well as establishing new cloisters and maintaining the existing ones. In 1176, by the order of Duke Casimir I, the capital of the bishopric was moved to Kammin. Since then, a change in the titles of the bishops in the region, which coincided with the increased significance of the local ordinaries. At the turn of the 12th century, the Pomeranian diocese was formally transformed into Bishopric of Kammin.
