Summary/Abstract: The article present the contemporary discussion among medievalists on the conflict that occurred at the end of 10th century between Mieszko I, duke of Polans, and Boleslaus II the Pious, the ruler of Bohemia; such conflict has been mentioned by Thietmar, bishop of Merseburg, in his chronicle. The dispute centered on a territory referred to as 'regnum ablatum'. Author supports the interpretation by Władysław Korta from the end of 20th century, who in one of his articles clearly stood for the territorial interpretation of the aforementioned conflict, indicating the land of Milczans (located at one time in Upper Lusatia) as the actual matter in dispute. Since we cannot achieve absolute certainty in solving the mystery of the 'taken domain', we should point at Lusatia, Silesia and Lesser Poland as regions where – according to the territorial interpretation – a specific smaller area should be searched for, to which the chronicler refers using the term 'regnum'. There are also hypotheses interpreting the discussed historical account in a immaterial context – regnum is understood as the right of Boleslaus II to the royalty, or as a title, infringed by Mieszko I, to which Boleslaus II was entitled within the territorial structure of the empire. At this point of the discussion, one should depart from dating this misunderstanding to the year 990, which is accepted in academic research, and from associating it with a mention of the loss of Niemcza by the Bohemians, because those were probably two unrelated events.
