Summary/Abstract: The paper presents and comments on an exceptionally important artifact of medieval Bulgarian history - Khan Tervel’s seal as a Caesar. It describes the author’s ‘journey” to that unique artifact, which is part of the collection of Harvard University’s branch in Dumbarton Oaks, Washington, D.C. The seal belonged to Khan Tervel as a Caesar and was used for stamp¬ing correspondence received in Constantinople (720-721). This is the earliest Bulgarian sphragistic artifact and is quite different from the images of Byzantine emperors and we could say that the signet is in fact the first portrait of Bulgaria’s medieval art.
