Summary/Abstract: Within the scope of an archaeological survey conducted by the Pergamon excavation from 2006 to 2011 in Elaia, an intensive ceramic survey was undertaken covering most of the urban area. During this survey, misfired pieces of ceramic and other pottery waste were found. These findings were concentrated in the northern part of the acropolis of Elaia and are important evidence of the local production of amphoras, jars and kitchen bowls. These latter were made of coarse pottery in a limited number of shapes and with carelessly decorated rims of quite variated forms. In several cases, archaeometric analyses revealed that these bowls were locally manufactured, hence confirming for the first time a local pottery production in Elaia. Furthermore, the geophysical survey conducted in the area hinted towards the existence of a number of kilns in the plain. According to archaeometric analyses, the aforesaid coarse pottery dating back to different time periods are concentrated in the north of the acropolis of Elaia, and this provides evidence for the localization of those kilns where these potteries were baked. The survey demonstrates that Elaia is home not only to coarse ware but also to a sample of much thinner and misfired pieces of pottery. These results prove the long-standing tradition of a local pottery production in Elaia from the Late Hellenistic to the Late Roman Imperial Period.
