Summary/Abstract: In this paper, I will discuss sociolinguistic studies of Rexhep Ismajli on Standard Albanian. Ismajli has been among the first authors to introduce sociolinguistic studies related to Standard Albanian. At first, he has discussed main sociolinguistic features of Standard Albanian, and in comparison to other Albanian scholars who have been mainly concentrated on linguistic features of Standard Albanian, Ismajli has clearly indicated that alongside linguistic features, other features related to status, prestige, and function should be taken into consideration. Further, in his studies, Ismajli has provided a sociolinguistic outlook on language planning efforts in Albania and Kosovo after World War II, while indicated different motives which have driven language policy and planning in these to Albanian areas. He indicated clearly that language planning efforts in Albania were ideologically motivated to support norm selection based on which Standard Albanian was codified, while national motives have predominated efforts in Kosovo in supporting Standard Language which was finally codified in Orthography Congress of 1972 in Tirana. In his last part of studies, Ismajli has shown the variation which today exists in Albanian in the sense of coexistence of Standard Albanian with other socially and geographically based varieties of Albanian.
