SOCIOLINGUISTIC STUDIES ON STANDARDIZATION OF ALBANIAN

Summary/Abstract: This paper summarizes the main sociolinguistic studies dealing with the standardization process of Albanian language. The paper presents the main views that have emerged for the standardization of the Albanian language since the National Revival when the first ideas for Albanian standardization have emerged to this day. Based on the reviewed literature it can be concluded that since the problem of standard Albanian literary from the Renaissance until the end of World War II has been treated and discussed in a more liberal and more arguable spirit, after World War II this issue had a powerful influence of totalitarian regime which came to power in socialist Albania. It can be said that the problem of standard Albanian has occupied a central place in Albanian language and continues to be a topic of great interest even nowadays. Standardization of the Albanian language and the main stages of this process can be said to have been at the center of the attention of Albanian linguistics for more than a century and continues to be to date. This has also happened because the creation and development of Albanian linguistics has proceeded in parallel with the efforts of Albanians to standardize the Albanian language. The issue of standardization of Albanian and related problems to it has a nearly a century old extension in Albanian language and culture. Starting from the first ideas about the need to have a standard language for the Albanian people, then from the first concrete efforts that through the drafting of common orthography for Albanian and institutional efforts influenced by the regimes of those times, the standard Albanian was the object of numerous, often controversial, discussions among the scholars who have dealt with this problem. In this paper we will first briefly describe how the process of standardization of Albanian language by the National Renaissance has been reflected up to nowadays. Our main goal is to present the most important sociolinguistic views regarding the standardization of Albanian.
