Summary/Abstract: In his Petrolio Pier Paolo Pasolini quotes some verses from Guido Gozzano and in one of his essays he describes the author of Colloqui as “the poet of pastiche”, stressing his epic perspective which puts him close to Dante. Considering that numerous allusions to Divine Comedy and a taste for pastiche are also basic elements of Pasolini’s last novel, I analyse various quotes and allusions to Gozzano’s poetry in Petrolio to specify their characteristics and determine their functions in the text. I aim to establish how much Pasolini is inspired by Gozzano and how much he rewrites the poet’s works by putting them in a different context and thus modifying their meaning
