Summary/Abstract: The paper aims to present the history of teaching foreign languages in Poland at the beginning of the twentieth century and, on this background, the Italian manual Praktyczna metoda języka włoskiego of Fortunato Giannini and Carlo Moscheni. The structure of the manual and the various methodological solutions applied by the authors in the teaching process reveal the importance of the contrastive, philological and pragmatic approach in various parts of the manual. At the meantime are accentuated informations on Italian language and culture.
