Summary/Abstract: This paper gives a review of the different interpretations and classifications of aspect, a verbal property, in the relevant literature in English. It explains the difference between ‘tense’ and ‘time’ and presents different considerations of aspect, starting from those according to which aspects defines the action and its relative duration or punctuality, to those analysing aspect as an inherent property of verbs. More recent research is characterized by linguistic examination of the semantics of verbs, whereas the classifications of aspect are predominantly based on the difference between grammatical and lexical aspect. Additionally, the paper emphasizes the importance of interpretation of aspect purely at the level of the phrase or clause, and highlights the significance of classifying aspect and its different components in the analysis of both verb phrase, as well as noun phrases whose head is a deverbal noun.
