Summary/Abstract: After almost disappearing into French prose fiction after 1945, the First World War became once again an important source of inspiration for novelists since the 1980s. Proximity to the commemoration of the centenary of this tragic conflict reinforced this trend. The historical re-enactment or the mere evocation of the period 1914-1918 is an opportunity to engage in psychological analysis as well as a critical reflection on the collective behavior of civilians and soldiers of that period. Our study is particularly interested in four novels which, each in their own way, insist on the horror and absurdity of war : Cris by Laurent Gaudé (2001), Les Âmesgrises by Philippe Claudel (2003), 14 by Jean Echenoz (2012) and Au revoir là-haut by Pierre Lemaitre (2013).
