Summary/Abstract: According to E. Levinas, even philosophy has its share of responsibility for the tragedies of the twentieth century, because the ontological conceptions of man necessarily lead to totalitarianism. To find the meaning of man's humanism we must look for it in ethics. Man is not only a being, nor a subject of enjoyment, nor that of knowledge, but above all the ethical subject. Man, I'm responsible for the other. My responsibility has no limits: I answer the needs of others, of their sufferings and even of their faults - Lévinas speaks of the substitution of me for the other. This responsibility does not come from my initiative: I have been assigned to responsibility in an absolute past that has never been present. The ethical relationship with the other, which is asymmetrical and anachronistic, is the foundation of the just society where all are equal.
