Summary/Abstract: In this article the preconditions for the rise of the famous Vienna School of Art Criticism are studied, and the ideological and methodological contributions of its forerunners and followers in the history of art critique are highlighted. The consideration is focused on the role of F. Wickhoff in determining the main directions of art history studies and methodological principles of analysis of art phenomena. Wickhoff drew the attention of the school's members to the earlier neglected periods of art's development in Late Antiquity, Byzantium, Baroque, and Mannerism. In the study of these periods, he applied strict analytical principles and methods, later inherited by his followers.
