Summary/Abstract: From the point of view of a teacher of Polish as a foreign language, the author concentrates on wishing as a speech act. She aims to show the similarities and differences between expressing wishes in Polish and Italian, focusing on contexts of that type of spoken and written language performance, typical words and expressions. Moreover, the author tries to answer the question of how the knowledge of culture affects the process of studying a language, and whether knowing culture codes typical for a certain society encourages or discourages the learners.
