Czy istnieją teologiczne wytyczne dla tłumaczeń?
Theological guidelines for translations – do they exist?

Summary/Abstract: This article makes an attempt to find in the teaching of contemporary Popes the guidelines for the translations of the text of faith. Biblical and liturgical translations already have very long traditions. Also the basic texts of prayers, such as „Our Father”, or „Hail Mary” has been already translated into many languages. Is this experience of translations of the texts linked to the Christian faith giving any guiding principles for contemporary translators? With this question in mind the author analyzed the teaching of the last Popes: Paul VI, John Paul II, Benedict XVI and Francis as well as of the Second Vatican Council. The author discovered that even though they did not elaborate any general theory of translation, nevertheless it is possible to find in their teaching some interesting suggestions. These could be called the principles „of double faithfulness” (to the Christian faith and to local cultures), „of cultural reference”, „of the dynamics of the language”, and „of collective translating subject” (Church community). It seems that these four principles could be better developed into more elaborated theology of translations.
