Summary/Abstract: The article discusses the phenomenon of split personality which has its roots in distant periods of human existence and relates to the duality of human beings and all that makes them such. The unceasing need for a man to identify himself and find his place and his goals is often transposed into creating a new entity that emerges from the depths of the psychic and makes its way into the everyday life. This brief analysis of split personality, conducted on EA Poe’s story titled William Wilson made it possible to identify the essential moments when the phenomenon first appeared in literature and how the phenomenon is used to present the structural psychology of characters, and to a larger scale, a universal psychological state which is not affected by time and space.
