Summary/Abstract: The article indicates that social work performs a very important function in the process of supporting people and families which are in a difficult life situation. Social service workers, particularly social workers and family doing social work, establish relations with the customer, his/her family, their social environment and employees of various institutions. These relations are characterized by a dissimilarity of action and often constitute a seedbed of ethical dilemmas. The data used in the article was gathered by means of participating observation conducted amongst social service workers performing their social work duties, which drew the author’s attention to problems of the profession and ethical dilemmas workers struggle with. The article introduces ethical dilemmas of the social worker and the family assistant who struggle with numerous difficulties which often derive from the imperfections of the current social service system. Many barriers which are connected with social work can successfully be minimized by providing suitable conditions for professionals to achieve the goals of social work. Perhaps, it will be a better solution in the future to provide social work as a social service to be performed by other institutions of social security.
