Summary/Abstract: The tile stove, as a monument of interior architecture, has both a heating and a decorative purpose. Its volume can be inspired by military defensive architecture, by the architecture of ecclesiastic monuments or by secular architecture. The stove’s decorative aspect is represented by the design of the tiles (shape, iconographical repertoire, the enamel chromatics). Among the medieval tiles discovered on the Wallachian territory, the ones selected for this study are those that have an ornamentation that is representative of the architecture of the era: towers, citadel defensive walls, with merlons and battlements, church silhouettes topped by crosses, domes, arcades, stone walls with windows and recesses. The above mentioned decorative elements are found in disc tiles, convex tiles, fretted tiles, and panel tiles, pieces designed for the crown of the stove or the volumetric register corresponding to the heating chamber.
