Summary/Abstract: The paper deals with the functions and use of diminutives in Bulgarian and Greek and aims to present a formal-semantic analysis as well as the results from an analysis of a translation corpus. It is a well-known fact that the phenomenon of diminutiveness exists in both languages; however, there is a significant asymmetry in the frequency of use of diminutives in Bulgarian and Greek, apparently resulting from certain differences in the meanings and functions of diminutive forms. These differences make it difficult for Bulgarians to learn Greek in terms of the proper use of diminutives. For this reason, it was considered necessary to study the phenomenon of diminutiveness in Greek in more detail and to discover the ways of its rendering into Bulgarian. Due to the limited volume of an article, the object of the present research focuses only on diminutive nouns.
