Summary/Abstract: In Poland, a lot is being said and written about the rising costs of healthcare. This causes the need for a more thorough look at the financial flows in the health sector. Actions taken so far, i.e. introducing changes to the lists of reimbursable medicines, activities for raising the efficiency of running healthcare entities through e.g. benchmarking assessments, or verification of activities reflecting so-called maps of health needs, are only a small part of the necessary activities. There is still not enough attention devoted to the issues of preventive healthcare, a health-related activity as the part of the health care system which brings the best results for both health and economy. This article is an attempt to reference medical expenses to the cost of preventive measures in the field of selected significant types of oncological illnesses.
