Summary/Abstract: Purpose – Analysis of refunds policy and financing of pharmaceuticals in European countries. Design/methodology/approach – Analysis of the literature on reimbursement policies of pharmaceutical products. Analysis of statistical information on the public and private financing of pharmaceutical products purchase. Findings – Public financing of pharmaceuticals is dominating in Western Europe. Deficiencies in public funding are often covered by private health insurance. In Central and Eastern Europe people are likely to use generic than innovative pharmaceutical products and private financing is larger than public. The low share of private insurance in CEE countries means that spending on pharmaceutical products are a significant part of household expenditures. Originality/value – There are few studies on cross-country in terms of pharmaceuticals reimbursement.
