The oneness and the role of adult teacher in Folk High Schools activities

Summary/Abstract: The idea of Folk High School (FHS) is possessed by one of the most famous human beings in North countries – Nicol Frederick Severin Grundtvig (1783 – 1872). This was one of the most brave ideas in rebellious XIX century and became a credo in Danish “free schools and higher folk schools movement”, and is also effective in our time. FHS both in Grundvitg times and currently facilitates the understanding of life, the upholding of responsibilities of citizens, also the contribution to developing the main cultural level, as well as raising well-rounded personality. FHS are opened to all people despite their social status, age, and education in all countries. Folk high school activities provide exceptional learning background; specific relationship between students and teachers exists. These are the main factors for the existence of folk high schools; their specifics, needs, revelation of motivations may help to understand their essence better. This could improve the existing folk high school model in Lithuania and develop adults’ training perspectives. The goals of this article: to highlight the oneness of teachers of FHS; to abstract the oneness of motivations of FHS teachers to work in FHS; to discuss qualifications and competences of FHS teachers; to reveal FHS teachers expectations; to calculate learners attitude towards FHS teachers; to characterize teachers’ attitude towards prospective of FHS. Aiming to highlight the role of teachers in FHS, the empirical research was performed in randomly chosen FHS in Sweden, Germany and Lithuania with the funding from EU Socrates program (90518–CP–1–2001–1–LT–GRUNDTVIG–G1). The research was executed in two levels: students of HFS and the inquiry of FHS teachers. The material was coded and processed using packet for work with statistical data – SPSS.
