Summary/Abstract: Polish families have cooperated with schools for centuries usually negotiating how socialization, educational goals and methods of teaching and learning were chosen with mutual respect. After 1945 the ruling communist party, following suit of the Soviets, subjugated the schools to make the new generation ideologically obedient. They openly rejected the family values and its role in educating children and youth. The ideals and attitudes promoted by culturally rooted families were replaced by school competition and mutual negation of transmitted meanings. The conflict became the context for any socialization, which in turn resulted in specific attitudes and behavioral patterns of youth. They were listed in the document analyzed in the article. The authors of the report called the context for youth socialization “the sociological vacuum” meaning the empty space between the national identity and the family and close friends communities.
