Summary/Abstract: Teacher training in the framework of in-service adult higher education included extramural, even-ing and weekend study programs. They developed in line with the strong traditions of the so called - distance studies - as well as new trends of adult education. The decisive demand after 1945 came from the nationwide project of Polish United Workers' Party to create the so called "new inteligentia" of working class and peasantry. The extra demand came also from the shortages of teachers at all levels. The dominant forms of training in the framework of in-service adult higher education was ex-tramural, evening and weekend study programs. Each of the forms was a very difficult way for the teachers to get their qualifications. They demanded high determination, self-discipline and strong support from the headmasters of schools they had already been working for. They were also an organizational challenger for higher education institutions. Still the study forms for in-service adults played an important role in training the large popula-tion of educators who were so in demand for schools and other educational units in Peoples' Republic of Poland (1945-1989).
