Summary/Abstract: Land is a resource required for every human activity. Its area is limited and cannot be relocated. Therefore, the state’s duty is to protect agricultural land in order to ensure food security for its citizens. Legal solutions for trading in agricultural property are among ways of achieving the objective. When analysing principles for transferring agricultural property rights, three main periods, which differed in the degree of liberalisation and the scope of unification of land trading between natural persons and the Agricultural Property Agency, may be distinguished. Irrespective of legal amendments, however, the main intention was to create regulations which paid special attention to family farms, favoured the improvement of the area structure and the transfer of agricultural land to appropriate users, and prevented excessive concentration. These objectives were to be achieved through different mechanisms and instruments, and market trading in agricultural land was always carried out in two distinct segments with different procedures for developing land from the stock of the state treasury and between natural persons. These differences, though to a much lesser extent, persisted after 30 April 2016.
