Employment in the service sector in the knowledge-based economy − structural changes

Summary/Abstract: This paper focuses at identifying the directions and tempo of transformations of the internal structure of service sector in the context of building a knowledge-based economy. The presentation of study results is divided into two parts. The first one describes the structural changes occurring within economies and their service sectors on the way towards a knowledge-based economy. The other part presents results of a comparative study on the structure of employment in the service sectors across the EU member countries. The analysis covers the 2008-2015 period. The changes taking place in the internal structure of service sector display universal trends that seem characteristic of economies heading towards the status of a knowledge-based economy. The countries that are well advanced in their progress towards a knowledge-based economy have well-developed services based on knowledge. The service sector is subject to continuous internal changes and has not reached its final form even in the most developed economies.
