Summary/Abstract: The XXI century is characterised by worldwide urban processes. The forecasts show three quarters of world population will have been living in cities by the end of the present century. Economists and politics claim that cities are both essential and are fuelling the right functioning economy. Although European cities show huge differences in economic and societal perspectives, still common challenges such as traffic jams and the loss of time, polluted air and health consequences for inhabitants, street noise or transport accidents results can be indentified in most of them. In many cities certain measures are taken to improve the citizens’ lives quality. Smart city is the concept including inhabitants, local authorities, local entrepreneurs and other institutions cooperation at all stages of existence. The main goal of this concept is aiming to use available space and resources in an effective way and being supported by technology and direct societal activities. The aim of this article is to identify the challenges European cities are facing nowadays, to present the main areas of smart city concept and to show the role of the urban transport and communication sector in the realisation of this idea. The author presents European actions in terms of city mobility and analyses the EU strategic documents in which future key elements of participatory support of sustainable mobility in the cities are programmed.
