Summary/Abstract: Scientific research related to the issues of competitiveness are essential for economic policy, because they allow to determine the best path for the development of individual regions and to identify factors of competitiveness which are important for further growth. The article contains diverse approaches to define competitiveness and identifies contemporary factors of competitiveness of regions. Then authors present the analysis of the role of transport infrastructure on improving competitiveness of the European Union. Investment in transport infrastructure are both demand and supply-side incentives for economic growth, contributing to improving productivity. Article is based on research conducted within the project IC-EU („Impact of transport infrastructure on international competitiveness of Europe”) within the 7th Framework Programme
