Summary/Abstract: During the 18th century, in the context of the establishment of the power of the Ottoman Empire, the Country of Moldavia was ruled by princes appointed directly by the High Porte, selecting them from within the Greek families settled in the Fanar District of Istanbul. These Princes tried, during times of considerable political and military instability, to systematize the city of Iași, the capital city of the Country of Moldavia. In spite of relatively short reigns, the military occupations and the devastating fires, the city of Iași, Moldavia’s main center of power, underwent periods of urban invigoration following the effort of (re)designing the street plot and the water adduction system and of imposing hygiene norms that would contribute to preventing epidemics. Following these measures, the population of the city grew and the urban perimeter was enlarged.
