Word Formation in Local Dialects. Selected Methodological Problems

Summary/Abstract: The application of synchronic word formation analysis to the study of dialects enables us among others to register examples of multi-motivational and multi-variational derivatives as well as modification or acquisition of structural meanings often leading to category shifts. On account of heterogeneity of vocabulary in dialects it is essential to include etymological investigation in the analysis of the derivatives of unclear semantic motivation. Conclusions drawn from an observation of the phenomena of word formation in dialects are of evolutional character – they allow to discover mechanisms of the formation of derivatives, the course and development of the word formation process and its dynamics. It is necessary to combine the two distinct research methods in the analysis of dialects – synchronic and evolutional. They should be treated as complementary.
