Summary/Abstract: Tsar Samuel’s personality is appealing to the historical memory of Bulgarians. This article traces the interpretations of Samuel’s image in known or lesser known functional and journalistic texts (in Lyuben Karavelov’s and Hristo Botev’s works). This survey is based on Erikson’s research paradigm, on his ideas of identity and crisis. The research differentiates the separate types of identity also depending on their institutional contexts (Castells), because of which in it two typologies are meeting – of identities and of ways for their building. The article combines methods of content, structural and intertextual analysis. The author concludes that Tsar Samuel’s image had often functioned as means of constructing a national identity during Bulgarian Revival.
